Day 70: Snow, Snow, Snow

Woke up to a winter wonder land. I prayed for a snow day today but ended up going to work and almost dying 5 times on the way. Boyd prayed that today wouldn't be a snow day because he had an exam today. Needless to say I'm ready for the snow to go away and for spring to be here.

Boyd called from school and asked me to take some pictures. He said that this is what he thinks of when he remembers Ohio winters. White, Everywhere!

Day 69: Basketball

CONGRATULATIONS TO ME! This is my 100th post!

Boyd and I love going to the gym late at night. We usually go around 8:30 p.m. and stay till 10:00 p.m. Lately Boyd and I have been playing a lot of basketball. Boyd likes to practice before he has ward ball. Today while we were shooting around Boyd somehow managed to get the basketball stuck! This is one of those moments where I wish I had my camera with me. I did get a picture with his phone.

When he saw this he was baffled. He kept saying "I have seen this happen in games before but I have never done it myself"

Day 68: Big Mouth Boyd

Boyd has a big mouth. Not the tattle tell, big mouth, say rude things type. But rather Boyd physically has a ginormous mouth. I, on the other hand, have a relatively small mouth. To prove my point I made Boyd take a picture of me today trying to eat the same paczki he ate yesterday. I obviously can't fit the whole thing in my mouth like Boyd.

Photobucket

Boyd asked me if I was even opening my mouth up all the way. Honestly my jaw is killing me right now. I didn't even get to eat my paczki because my mouth hurts so bad.

Day 67: Paczki!

I have a sugar headache and I love it. I guess there is a strong Polish heritage in this area. We stopped by our local doughnut shoppe and picked up Paczki (pronounced poonch-key). The ones made at this shop are gargantuan jelly-filled doughnuts. I almost couldn't even fit it in my mouth.
(According to the scale at the doctor's office, I'm obese under BMI standards.)

Earlier today, we entered the shop only to find out that they were all sold out, but the baker said he would bake some more just for us from the batch that he saved for himself. He's awesome. Maybe one day, we'll tell you about him. I went to class and came back an hour later, and there they were, sitting in a box, ready for me to eat. Yum.

This whole paczki thing has led Allison and me to lots of discussions on the Catholic traditions for this time of year. She had no idea what lent is or fat tuesday or ash wednesday or really any of the Catholic traditions of Easter preparation. For me, it has brought back a lot of memories of my High School years, when my friends of all different denominations would figure out what they were giving up for lent. Most of the time it was some type of food, like french fries or chocolate. I would just laugh at all of them or volunteer something to do something too like no kissing for lent when I didn't have a girlfriend. I never felt the need to participate for real because I fast the first Sunday of every month. Anyway, I don't think that any of them made it the whole month, ever. I'm exaggerating, but still many of them gave up giving up something for lent long before it was over. My favorite was when one of my friends tried to give up chocolate for lent and didn't even last the first weekend before he was sneeking chocolate here and there. My other favorite would come after Easter and my friends would gorge themselves on whatever they had been giving up. What was the point then?
It also reminds me of the goings on this time of year in Romania. It's so hilarious. Every year around now, you start seeing signs pop up everywhere saying "de post." In the Romanian Orthodox church they call the month before Easter their fast. This fast is what the "de post" is referring to. The bakeries and other food stores prepare special recipes for the Post because members of the Romanian orthodox church are supposed to abstain from eating meat products and some other things during this month. Even though it still has the same Biblical origins, example Jesus fasted forty days and nights, the phrase to fast has taken on a whole new meaning in Romania. They can't grasp the concept that to fast means to abstain from eating and drinking. In their heads, they can eat all they want as long as it has been made "de post," using only ingredients that qualify under the rules of the fast. It makes it really interesting when you are trying to explain to people that on the first Sunday of every month we fast as a church. We say something like, "When we fast we don't eat or drink anything for a day," and so on. Without fail someone always always always asks, "So you don't even drink water?" . . . and sometimes "You don't eat anything?" In my head I'm thinking, "Isn't that what I just said? Isn't that what it means to fast? Don't you read the Bible?" Then, we'd go back and explain it all over again. Well, we got smart and learned a thing or two about their culture. We started using the phrase "Post Negru." A "post negru" (black fast) is what we would call a traditional fast with the exception of drinking water. Aha, this is why no matter who we were teaching they always asked the same question every time we taught about fasting.
Anyway, looking forward to Easter.

Day 66: Mutant Strawberries

I have this weird quirk with food. I always look at my food before putting it in my mouth. I didn't realize I would do this until I met Boyd. While we were dating Boyd would try to feed me things and the first thing I would do is look down at what he is feeding me. He would always ask me "don't you trust me?!?" Of course I did but I had to explain to him that I look at my food even when I feed myself. It's not that he gave me something gross and he is yet to give me something weird, but for some reason I will always look at my food. Maybe that is why I like taking pictures of my food before I eat it. . .

We went to visit Boyd's parents this weekend and they sent us home with food, as always. I love parents. Parents are the reason why we don't starve. Anyway, they sent us home with these strawberries. These have got to be some of the craziest mutant strawberries I have ever seen, but they sure are some of the tastiest strawberries we have ever had.

Day 65: Grandma Feet

Allison always makes fun of my feet. She calls them alien toes and can hardly look at them because they disgust her so.
Well, I have Miller toes. Not quite webbed to the tip like others of my relatives, but my second toe is longer than the first. Also, the nail on my second toe doesn't grow out as much as it grows down. Much like a table cloth drapes over a table, my toenail, as it grows, bends over the front of my second toe. It's the product of years of pounding from hours of soccer practice and running.
Today, to get back at Allison, I told her that she has grandma feet. The soles of her feet are dry and cracking, thus making her feet look wrinkled and old. So I took a picture to prove it to her and here it is.

Do you see those wrinkles under her toe pads? They're old looking: grandma feet.

Day 64: Boyd Goes To The Dr.

This morning at 5 a.m. Boyd got out of bed, grabbed a flashlight, walked to the bathroom, came back to the room, and told me he needed to go to the doctor. He said he was pretty sure he had strep. On Boyd's last PD (Physical Diagnosis) test he had to know what strep looks like so he was pretty sure he had it.

Being in medical school has opened our eyes to all the things we can contract from other people. One night I was flipping through one of Boyd's Micro Bio books and grossed myself out. I'm glad Boyd is the one in med school and not me.

Went to the doctor today and the first thing the doctor said when he looked into Boyd's throat was "eww". Going to the doctor with Boyd is weird. I'm so used to being the one going to the doctor it was strange the other way around. This is the first time since we have been married that I went with Boyd to the doctor.

Result: Boyd has strep!

This is Boyd's "I'm sick and I'm making sad eyes" face.
He has been making this face for the past 3 days.

Hopefully with some amoxicillin in him, he will get feeling better soon.

P.S. Latest BYU Basketball News: One of our starters admitted to breaking the honor code and got kicked off the team! What timing! BOO! We were so flustered when we heard the news. There goes our chances of having it all this year. BYU lost to New Mexico on Wednesday. That was depressing. However, we played Wyoming tonight and WON 102 to 78! Uhh GOOOOO Cougars! If people want to know yes we are "Jimmered." Boyd said " I've been Jimmered for 4 years now." Go BYU Basketball

Day 63: Bread Battle

Since Boyd has been sick all he wants is toast. Today that's practically all he has eaten. We bought two different types of bread to have a bread battle. Which is better, Schwebel's or Wonder? Boyd wanted to try the different types of bread because there is a significant difference in the price. If you can't tell the difference, then why buy the expensive one. The verdict? Boyd actually likes Schwebel's better than Wonder when it is toasted. We haven't side by side compared them when they are not toasted, but so far, the winner is Schwebel's. We'll have to wait till Boyd wants something besides toast to compare them again.

Day 62: Sharing is not caring

Last week was awful! I had food poising and then got sick the day after. Boyd was playing with our camera and he said he took pictures of me that he liked because of the setting on our camera. I told Boyd not to put them up on the blog because I looked like a mess. Well, being the good wifey that I am I decided to share what ever I had with Boyd. Now he is the one dying on the couch while I took pictures of him, trying to capture the same light. Poor Boyd. He has the same thing I had a yucky fever. I know Boyd isn't feeling like himself when he tells me he is cold. Both of us are natural human furnaces and tend to expel a lot of body heat. Today Boyd wore a sweater! Last week I had a fever of 101.8
Boyd beat my temperature with his 101.9
Hopefully what ever we have will soon be gone! Yuck!

It is only fair that I put up my yucky pictures if I'm going to put up sick pictures of Boyd.

Day 61: Hat To Be

Today I went to Lara's house and she started teaching me how to crochet these really cute hats! I'm so grateful for Lara. She has been the most wonderful friend anyone could ask for. When we moved to Ohio I had the hardest time adjusting but Lara and her husband Matt have been so kind to us. She makes you feel like you are the most special person in the whole world. I always tell Boyd I want to be just like Lara. She is so good at everything (literally everything: photography, making bread, being nice, scrap-booking, making everything look cute, and more ). I have been so blessed to know Lara and have her as a friend. I'm so sad she and her family will be moving in a few months but I'm sure grateful that I have been blessed with Lara as my friend.

It doesn't look like much now but when I finish it there will be pictures.
